WHANGAPARAOA RATEPAYERS AND RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER - MARCH 2014

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT

Join the Whangaparaoa Ratepayers and Residents Association and back the current committee for re-election

Help us continue our good work

We need to follow through on issues that matter to you:

Auckland Council Unitary Plan submissions and cross-submissions that will help save the special character of Whangaparaoa.  These include

  • Protecting Whangaparaoa’s golf courses at Gulf Harbour and Army Bay from housing developments

  • Making the Hammerhead at Gulf Harbour a reserve to reflect its use

  • Making the Council-owned Marina Land at Gulf Harbour provide parking for berth holders and no housing

  • Keeping the limit on housing development at Gulf Harbour because of traffic and infrastructure issues

  • Tightening up on provisions for Boarding Houses

  • Changing ‘Sites and Places of Value to Mana Whenua’ to an alert layer only

  • Require notification of cellphone towers to at least local residents

  • Development controls in catchments of low-lying areas like Manly, Arkles and Stanmore Bay to prevent flooding of properties

  • Protecting the bush at the back of Arkles Bay between Wade River Road and McKenzie Ave

  • Reducing density around the Whangaparaoa Plaza where there are traffic, flooding and infrastructure issues

  • Keeping the large lot and bush character along the Weiti Estuary

  • Limiting development of the Weiti Block by Stillwater

UPCOMING ISSUES WE ARE WORKING ON

  • Cross-submissions to the Unitary Plan in May and June – then preparing evidence and presenting in 2015

  • Another presentation to the Watercare Board over the wastewater and water meter charging issues for tank-water residents

  • Advocacy and presentations to Auckland Transport on improved bus services for Whangaparaoa – including to Arkles Bay; we are planning a survey in support

  • Keeping and extending the ban on set-netting at Arkles Bay

  • Presentations to Auckland Council, the Hibiscus & Bays Local Board and Auckland Transport on making the Hibiscus Coast spray-free

KEEP US GOING

Your support is important.  Last year there was a move by some people to wind the association up.  We do not want this to happen.  We also want to build our membership and support from residents and ratepayers of Whangaparaoa that believe in and support the issues we are fighting for on your behalf

ACTIVITIES OVER THE LAST YEAR

Ongoing pressure on Council and Watercare for a fairer deal on wastewater charging and associated water meter installation for residents on water tanks – meetings, presentations, lobbying

Continued advocacy on preventing cellphone towers in areas affecting local residents

Advocacy and support for local residents of Matai Road opposed to a Boarding House – lobbying, meeting

Opposition to the sale of the Council-owned Marina Land at Gulf Harbour – presentations and lobbying Council and the Local Board

Encouraging, assisting and lodging submissions to the Auckland Council Unitary Plan – meetings, preparing and assisting with submissions
